Fire dust can not only be obtained using charcoal but also employing metal powders such as aluminium. The major drawback of these compositions is that generally there is a need for special ignition methods and hot primes such as thermite, and depending on the compositon simple gunpowder often will not do.
On the other hand we do not have to handle this problem when metal powders are contained in black powder type compositions and in this case the possible effects are very pleasing (this may come from the Senko hanabi effect). However special mixing methods like in the case of black powder may be necessary for best performances.
Some glitter effects also make use of the basic chemicals of BP and therefore fall into this category.
Some old-fashioned chemicals such as realgar are not available any longer and in these cases substitutes will have to be found.
